Etsy Craft Night: Zines
Led by The Urban Craft Center and L.A. Zine Fest 2012
7:00-9:00pm • $5 admission (includes materials, drinks, and snacks)
Bust out the markers and scissors to draw, write, collage, cut, and fold. Zines (pronounced zeeen) are handmade mini-magazines that contain stories, comics, rants, raves, and anything else you can think of! The crew from The Urban Craft Center and upcoming L.A Zine Fest will guide you through a series of exercises to make one of your own.

Flower Power Drawings

During October, The Big Draw LA celebrates the power of drawing to help us see, think, and invent with a series of events around the city. At CAFAM, we’ll explore the vibrant flower motifs in our Golden State of Craftexhibition and turn our courtyard into a burst of color and fun with large-scale drawings. Join in YBLA’s monthly meeting of local knitters to share in diverse projects and good conversation. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged!
Sunday | October 16 – Adult Art Workshop
Coat Hanger Baskets with Aaron Kramer
1:00 – 5:00pm • $65/$55 CAFAM members
Join artist, tinkerer, and master of repurposing Aaron Kramer for another innovative workshop to construct a one-of-a-kind basket out of simple coat hangers and other unconventional materials such as VHS tape and coffee stirs. Your piece could even be transformed into a light fixture or sculptural object. Materials and tools will be on hand, but please bring in 12 coat hangers (with the thinner, white wire) if possible. Also, feel free to bring in your favorite pair of needle-nose pliers and wire cutters.

Saturday | October 22 - A Folk Art Everywhere Happening
Day of the Dead Drop-in workshop
11:00am - 2:00pm • A FREE event for all ages
Presented in collaboration with 24th St. Theatre

Decorate sugar skulls, make colorful paper flowers, and other activities as part of the traditional Mexican holiday, Día de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. A mixture of Aztec and Catholic traditions, the holiday focuses on family and friends gathering to remember loved ones who have died. These workshops are part of several Day of the Dead festivities happening at 24th St. Theatre, culminating in a big community celebration on Tuesday, November 1. Participants can drop in on either workshop between 11:00am and 2:00pm. Take one, leave one! Participants are asked to leave something they make on the community altar that will be seen by several hundred people at the November 1 event.

Mask Making with Dora De Larios
10:00am – 3:00pm • $110/$95 CAFAM members
Location: Dora’s Studio (8560 Venice Blvd, Los Angeles 90034)
Legendary ceramist and Golden State of Craftartist Dora De Larios has been making masks for decades—drawing on dreams, animals, and portraiture as inspiration. Join Dora at her studio and create your own expressive mask in clay. Includes bisque firing of masks. Please bring a sack lunch, beverages provided. Workshop is limited to 12 participants—sign up right away!
