An Improvisational Evening of Classical Persian Music

Cubberley Auditorium

Featuring two masters of Persian Music; Ostad Kayhan Kalhor on Kamancheh and Pezhham Akhavass on Tombak.  This concert will be in Palo Alto at the Cubberly Community Theater on Saturday, June 18th at 8:00 pm.

Experience the captivating music of Persia in this exclusive one night only concert. With two kinds of Persian instruments Kamancheh and Tombak, this concert will feature two of the most prominent muscians of classical Persian music today. 

About the instruments:
The Kamancheh is a type of bowed stringed instrument like a fiddle of Persia  which is the predecessor of the violin. Its melodies have a very soulful and haunting effect. The Tombak is a type of goblett drum from Persia which makes intricate and complicated rhythms with the fingers by a rolling and snapping on the side of the drum. 

Together based on the art of improvisation, this concert will be a unique journey through sound.


KAYHAN KALHOR
Kayhan is one of the most influential figures in Persian music today. A master of the Kamancheh, a kind of Persian fiddle, he is one of the most respected artist in music and a grammy nominee. Fresh off the 2011 tour of the Silk Road Ensemble with YoYo Ma, Kayhan is building musical cross bridges by performing in both eastern and western ensembles and bringing Persian music around the world.  A known virtuoso of the Kamancheh, he has performed, recorded and produced with the most legendary masters of Persian music and leading figures in western classical music.  www.kayhankalhor.net


PEZHHAM AKHAVASS
Pezhham was born in 1980, and is a multi instrumentalist from Iran, renowned for his modern day virtuosity of percussive instruments including the Tobmak, and Daf.  His innovative techniques and unique approach to rhythm has identified him as one of the most talented musicians of his generation.  Coming from an artistic family, Pezhham has traveled the world performing with the legendary singer Shahram Nazeri and has also performed and recorded with master Persian artist including Kayhan Kalhor, Hossein Alizadeh, Saeid Farajpouri and Aliakbar Moradi.  Pezhham now lives in San Francisco where he is studying music, teaching and other creative projects. www.akhavass.com
